Why rest is important to heal trauma
Identifying trauma blocking through over-working and the significance of rest for healing.
Do you constantly have the feeling that there is something you need to be doing? Feel disconnected from friends and family due to work? Continuously exerting yourself but never seem to be caught up? You may be overworking.
“Come unto ME, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 KJV
What is Trauma Blocking?
Trauma blocking is a disproportionate amount of time spent on mindless activities. These activities are achieved on a conscious or subconscious level in an effort to block out the painful memories and effects of trauma. Overworking is a form of trauma blocking. It is often accompanied with the belief that a task must be completed prior to allowing yourself any form of rest. However, you don’t have to earn rest because you have done enough work. Rest is not a reward for hard work. It is an essential factor for your overall well-being.
“Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your GOD hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.” Joshua 1:13 KJV
Signs of Trauma Blocking with Over-working
Irritability
Moody, annoyed, and grumpy disposition beyond work-related activities.
Lack of energy
Constant physical and mental weakness with the inability to regain strength. In spite of excessive consumption of caffeinated or energy-boosting beverages.
Not enough hours in the day
Intense emotional attachment to work despite other obligations. Continuous feeling of there is always something you can be doing.
Constantly busy
Always on the go from one task or location to the next. Never an opportunity to sit still or be content in the moment.
Isolation
Difficulty connecting with close friends and family. Withdrawn from engaging in family activities or social gatherings.
Stress
Emotional or physical tension introspective on assignments. Unbalanced emotions toward career-based goals, without full perspective on individual purpose.
Difficulty relaxing
Unable to enjoy time away from work due to constant concerns or worries. Restless, insomnia and sleep-deprived due to excessive dedication to work hours.
Having an unbalanced work-life is not a sign of success or productivity. Overworking will eventually lead to your physical health, mental health, and personal relationships deteriorating. It is imperative to notice when you are overworking, stop, and literally go to sleep. Overworking is a form of trauma blocking. You do not have to earn rest through work. Learn to balance your life and work. Prioritize your rest for improved mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. Achieve this by resting when it is most convenient for your schedule. This may be taking a nap on your lunch break and eating lunch at your desk when you return. However, avoid oversleeping.
Oversleeping is exceeding the regular amount of sleep hours, without being refreshed. It is another form of trauma blocking, i.e. sleeping the day away. However, no matter how long you sleep it doesn’t feel like it is enough time. Oversleeping can also lead to multiple health conditions. In contrast, resting is restorative sleep that helps to improve your body’s circulation and flexibility. You wake feeling refreshed and recharged. Rest is essential to your physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being. It allows your body and mind the opportunity to repair for inner healing from trauma.
Set a schedule for your rest and hold yourself accountable to allow yourself to rest. With no exceptions. Inform close family members and friends, who may contact frequently, when you will be unavailable during certain times of the day. Turn off the noise of the outside world by placing your phone on do not disturb every night before bed. Rest clears confusion.

Importance of Rest for Healing
Rest is essential for healing from trauma. You can’t hustle or overwork yourself to distract from the healing work required when you have experienced trauma. You may be carrying unhealed trauma from childhood or trauma from the previous generations who lacked the knowledgeable or courage to heal.
As a result, this unhealed trauma has molded how you function today. However you can release the trauma through sustainable inner healing in GOD. An essential aspect of healing GOD’s way is to rest. There may be an avoidance to rest in peace and quiet, because in the silence the dormant memories from trauma begin to speak. Also, you wrestle with the thoughts of unworthiness because you haven’t done enough to rest. Rest is seen as a reward for hard work. This is not true.
Rest is required to heal from the trauma you have endured. Rest in GOD through prayer, worship, and reading the scriptures of the Bible. You cannot control every situation by doing something. You are not in control of the world. There is only so much you can do. In addition, there is only so much GOD will allow you to do, because only HE will get the glory. GOD is sovereign. Rest in GOD and allow HIM to heal you.
